Prefiltering waste vegetable oil is a necessary step to making quality biodiesel and a must
have for eliminating contaminates in the oil. Filtering down to 300 micron works fine and of
course the more you filter the oil the better off the processing will be. Most processors I
have seen don't come with a way to prefilter your oil. Again this is not an option if you plan
on producing quality biodiesel.
The easiest way to prefilter your oil is through a 55 gallon drum filter. If you elevate your
drum to a height where the oil is higher than the circulating pump, you may be able to use it
to draw in filtered oil. This step in the biodiesel process could be messy. If you can find a
built in prefiltering system then you could avoid a lot of mess and lost oil.
If you don't prefilter the waste vegetable oil you will end up with chopped up french fry
biodiesel stuff!
